A new paper from our team, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), examines how childhood adversity influences somatic symptoms in adulthood. Using data from 2,234 participants in the MyBPLab 2.0 mobile study, researchers mapped where participants felt physical distress and found that early adversity predicted stronger sensations across the body—especially the abdomen and lower back in females and the lower back in males. These findings highlight how early adversity can leave a lasting imprint on the body and point to opportunities for psychotherapeutic interventions.
