The NIA Stress Measurement Network (SMN) is pleased to announce its annual Pilot Project Competition, inviting innovative research proposals that advance the measurement and understanding of psychosocial stress and identify mechanisms that may help reduce stress responses across the lifespan.

Supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), this funding opportunity aims to foster novel approaches to stress research, encourage methodological innovation, and support promising pilot studies that may lay the groundwork for future external funding.

The competition welcomes proposals addressing two primary research areas:

  • Innovative Stress Measurement

  • Stress Reduction Mechanisms

Experimental research examining mechanisms that reduce acute stress responses and may inform future intervention development, including studies guided by the Science of Behavior Change (SOBC) framework.

Priority will be given to innovative, feasible projects with strong potential for publication, future external funding, and completion within the one-year award period. We encourage researchers interested in advancing stress measurement and understanding the mechanisms of stress responses to apply.
